No do not rename the Windows folder on your desktop hard drive.

The problem may be your drive letters. When you enter "D:\I386\winnt32 /syspart:E: /tempdrive:E: /makelocalsource /noreboot" make sure E: is the drive letter for your laptop hard drive. It sounds like you're trying to install Windows on your desktop, which is why you would be getting the "Setup cannot continue" message.

Yes, it is on the C drive of the desktop that I am attaching the laptop drive to. I think you were talking about the laptop drive. The laptop drive is new, formatted, and empty. Do you think I would be risking catastrophe if I temporarily renamed the Windows folder on the C drive of the desktop?

Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it.

It sounds like you already have Windows on that hard drive (and it's been updated via Windows Update, which is why it is a "newer version"). Delete or rename your "windows" folder and you should be able to install a new copy.

Hi Ryan,
I tried #1 but am receiving "Setup cannot continue because the version of windows on your pc is newer than the version on the cd". Is there a way around this? I cannot use #2 as the laptop has no floppy. #3 is out because the desktop hard drives are all SATA (I am using one of the IDE cd-rom connections for the laptop hard drive). Any help would be much appreciated.

Well, there is a couple things you can do;
1. You can try setting up the laptop hard drive on the other IDE cable that you have (hopefully you have one). You may have to disconnect a storage drive to do this, but it is only temporary. If you have a CD/DVD drive there you can always make that the slave with no harm done.

2. Another thing you can do is simply leave them connected as master and slave and boot into your 3.5" as a slave drive. You probably have to change the BIOS to boot to hard drive 1 (as opposed to 0, which is master).

This guide is very usefull, except i have one problem. I connect my 1.8 hard drive with an adapter, except i cant set it as slave, and sets as master. so the 3.5 already in there goes to slave. when i want it the other way around. any idea on how to fix this?

True! Whether fragmentation is harmful itself is an endless debate. I defrag regularly (use one of the automatic defragmenters) because it definitely seems to create a difference in file access time. Besides i am not comfortable having the files on my drive all cluttered and scattered as excessive activity can decrease the life of the drive preponing hardware replacements. A few minutes spent defragging cant hurt, it will only ensure a healthier performance.
